Characters

Fabulous Beasts is a spiritual sequel where divine beasts from ancient legends navigate gig economy jobs and meme culture in today's urban chaos. Once awe-inspiring deities now grapple with shrunken powers, reborn as fluffy mini-creatures hustling through street-food stalls, K-pop fandoms, and startup grind.

TIANLU(PIPI)

The mythical creature Pixiu, born in ancient times with the Heaven as father and Earth as mother, is naturally joyful and courageous, fond of making friends, yet reveals a fierce side when encountering enemies. Since childhood, it has lived alongside its brother Bixie, witnessing the era of mythical beasts transition from prosperity to decline. Due to the influence of the Heavenly Court, part of its divine power and memories were sealed. Now, it serves as a guard and bodyguard at the Deer People's Shop deep in the mountains of Yunnan. It enjoys eating gold, silver, and jewels, but if unavailable, meat or dog food will suffice. In principle, it only takes in and never gives out—a Pixiu that is not picky about food.

BIXIE

The mythical beast Pixiu and Tianlu are brothers hatched from the same egg. Having emerged from the egg first, Pixiu became the elder brother. He possesses a calm and composed personality, far more cautious than his younger brother. As a highly responsible elder brother, he deeply cherishes Tianlu. Although he also enjoys eating gold, silver, and jewels, due to a shortage of food, he switched to consuming evil spirits and malevolent ghosts to ensure Tianlu could eat his fill. Later, for violating heavenly laws, he was swallowed by Tianlu to be protected within his belly. Having lost part of his memory, Pixiu is a very close friend of the Qilin, also known as SiBuXiang.

SIBUXIANG

A celestial court employee, originally holding a sinecure in the heavens, was sent to the mortal realm on a business trip under the pretext of "assisting down-and-out mythical beasts on earth." After descending, he opened the Deer People's Shop in the deep mountains of Yunnan to help mythical beasts and small animals. Easygoing and extremely averse to trouble, he can be somewhat cunning in business but shows great patience toward his companions. He usually wears a mask and a red cloud-patterned cloak. Fond of drinking tea and alcohol, fishing, and collecting magical artifacts, he is a gentle and reliable deer spirit.

TUYE

A moon rabbit from the lunar realm, who arrived on Earth during the late Ming and early Qing dynasties, embarked on a century-long journey of self-discovery. Owning numerous businesses—including beauty salons, tunneling and renovation services, and real estate—it is a wealthy rabbit whose riches are not immediately obvious. It met Sixiang in Beijing and often goes drinking and fishing with them, holding a deep affection for Sixiang, whom it later followed all the way to Yunnan. Fond of eating radishes and collecting houses, it is a considerate and capable big rabbit.

DITING

A high-ranking official of the underworld and the mount of Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva, it possesses the ability to "sit and hear eight hundred miles, lie and hear three thousand miles." Skilled in listening to the human heart, it can distinguish between good and evil. No matter the matter, it can find answers by listening to the earth. Due to years of excessive contemplation leading to hair loss, it has come to the human world for a vacation. With a calm and composed personality, it appears aloof but is actually a gentle giant dog. It holds great respect for Bai Ze and keeps a skeletal cat as a pet. Having a keen sense of fashion trends, it receives a gift of small dog clothes from Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva every year on its birthday.

XIAOLOU

Once a pile of cat bones beneath the Bridge of Helplessness, it was transformed into a skeletal kitten named Xiao Lou through the magical power of Diting. Having suffered abuse and death at human hands in its past life, it harbors deep hatred toward humans. Possessing sharp business acumen and management skills, it runs a thriving fur trade in the underworld and even assists Diting with many tasks. It regards Diting as a father figure and commands three skeletal rats and a pot of skeletal fish heads as subordinates. Passionate about fur, it has a personality that ensures vengeance for enemies and repayment for kindness.

HETAO

The mythical beast Mengji possesses the ability to peer into dreams. Because it is still young, it has not yet mastered this skill and often accidentally enters others' dreams. Mischievous and energetic, it is a little crybaby who frequently causes trouble but also shows responsibility in critical moments. Due to certain circumstances, it was sent by its mother to the Deer People's Shop. It dislikes studying but enjoys hunting with its godfather, Zhan Hu, and Pi Pi. It is best friends with Fu Zai.

FUZAI

The fox deity from Japan's Inari Grand Shrine. While traveling to Yunnan with other shrine foxes, it was drawn to the Deer People's Shop by the aroma of tofu and got lost, missing the chance to return to Japan, so it stayed at the shop. Primarily associated with harvests, it carries a stalk of rice in its mouth during business to accelerate crop ripening. Fond of eating tofu and pearl milk tea, it has a well-behaved and sensible personality, often playing with He Tao. It is a polite little fox.

TUBAOSHU

Also known as the Treasure-Spitting Mouse, it has a mouth but no stomach—whatever it eats turns into Mani pearls that it spits out. The color of the pearls varies depending on what it consumes. Innately kind-hearted, it stutters when nervous, and its greatest wish is to deliver all living beings from suffering. It is the founder of the Treasure-Spitting Deity Sect, with Brother Squirrel and Yin Jiao serving as its left and right guardians. It often distributes flyers to small animals in the mountains and runs a love counseling class. It adores Pi Pi.

JINJIAO

The Golden Horn, a former alchemy apprentice of the Supreme Lord Lao, used to tend the alchemy furnace with his younger brother, Silver Horn, under the Supreme Lord Lao's care. However, after dozing off and burning a batch of elixirs, he was banished to the mortal realm, transforming into a golden chinchilla. He has a carefree and easygoing personality, seemingly unaware of what worry means. He deeply cherishes his younger brother and is skilled in alchemy. He often runs errands for Sixiang and occasionally helps Silver Hand distribute flyers.
